First Vietnamese awarded French National Academy of Medicine’s title

Professor Phạm Văn Thức, principal of the Hải Phòng University of Medicine and Pharmacy, is the first Vietnamese to be awarded the academician title at the French National Academy of Medicine.

Thức, 57, of Thủy Nguyên District, northern Hải Phòng City was bestowed with the title at a ceremony held at the academy’s headquarters in Paris on December 20. The title was granted to prestigious scientists all over the world.

The French National Academy of Medicine currently has nearly 500 members, including 180 foreigners.

Thức is fluent in French and English. He did his bachelor of art at the Hà Nội University of Medicine in 1982 and then did his master of art in the major allergy and immunity at the school until 1985.

He then went on to work at the Hải Phòng University of Medicine and Pharmacy. In 1993, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis on allergy and immunity. In 2003, he was granted the title of associate professor for his outstanding achievements in training and research of medicine and pharmacy. In 2006, he was appointed principal of Hải Phòng University of Medicine and Pharmacy. In 2012, he was conferred upon the title of professor as recognition from the State for his contribution to the national medicine sector’s development.

As head of the university, he signed agreements with 25 international organisations for co-operation in training and education programnes between the university and the organisations, aimed at boosting the quality of education and training of the university at the regional level.

The university is now one of the leading educational establishments in Việt Nam and a member of many famous science associations in the world.
