Environmental police and market surveillance officers in Hanoi discovered employees of a Vietnamese firm re-labeling expired goods during a facility inspection on Wednesday.

Two employees of the HD Commercial and Manufacture Service JSC, Yen Hoa Ward, Cau Giay District, were caught red-handed placing biscuit packets from Thailand with expiry dates of April 8, 2016 into packaging with expiry date stamps of September 20, 2017, police said.

During the inspection, police found about 3,000 boxes of biscuits and sweets along with packaging tools.

“All devices and products related to the illegal act were confiscated for investigation,” Le Manh Hung, leader of the market surveillance team, said.

“The business owner could be fined up to VND200 million [US$8,972] for the offense.”

The Hanoi Market Surveillance Board and Hanoi police said that they have charged about 700 offenders with manufacturing out-of-date goods and counterfeit products since January.

“Re-labeling outdated goods, along with faking products, brings lucrative profits so many firms choose a dishonest path and neglect consumer health,” Hung worriedly said.

From December 12, 2015 to April 17 this year, 690 food safety violations were discovered with products collectively worth VND 4.5 billion ($201,870), according to the Hanoi Market Surveillance Board.
