LONDON: The red card mistakenly shown to West Bromwich Albion's Gareth McAuley against Manchester City on Saturday has been transferred to his team-mate Craig Dawson, the Football Association announced on Monday (Mar 23).

Dawson committed a last-man foul on Wilfried Bony in the second minute of the game at the Etihad Stadium, which City won 3-0, but referee Neil Swarbrick sent off McAuley, who had been close by.

Swarbrick later admitted that it had been a case of mistaken identity, so the FA has reattributed McAuley's one-game suspension to Dawson, who will miss his side's home match with Queens Park Rangers on April 4.

"Following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today [Monday 23 March 2015], a claim of mistaken identity in relation to West Bromwich Albion's Gareth McAuley was successful," the FA said in a statement on its website.

"The player was dismissed during the game against Manchester City on Saturday [21 March 2015] for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity. The standard punishment of a one-match suspension has been transferred to Craig Dawson and will be served with immediate effect."
