"All operations (arrivals and departures) at (Dubai International) DXB have been suspended until further notice following the incident involving flight EK521," Dubai Airports said on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

All passengers on board the plane coming from India were evacuated safely, the government said earlier, as footage on social media showed smoke billowing from the aircraft. The cause was not immediately clear.

Dubai Airports later said the airport would reopen from 6.30pm local time, with larger aircraft to be given priority.
