Before the sun set it was time to
roam the market and find the special-
ties of the area – a basket of steamed
sticky rice and steamed or BBQ pork.
A dish of boiled sour vegetables was
the perfect addition. The local fish are
very delicious too, but you should order
it only if you have a big appetite. The
night in Tu Le valley was unforgettable,
with its peaceful atmosphere, friendly
people and delicious food.
When the sun rose, the green val-
ley was blanketed with a wisp of thin
mist. After a two hour drive we got out
to learn more about the local minority
people. On the way we saw kids going
to school, playing chess and spending
time with their parents.
The main group living in this area
is the Hmong, while Thai (8 per cent)
and Kinh (2 per cent) make up the re-
mainder.
With more than 2,200ha of ter-
raced fields in the area, there are spec-
tacular views all around. During harvest
time, the Mu Cang Chai landscape is
beautified with a golden sea of rice like
golden ladder up to heaven.
When visiting Mu Cang Chai, tour-
ists can enjoy the beauty of nature and
see the vitality of the pine forest, peach
trees and apricot trees. We trekked along
a trail which connects many villages of
different ethic minorities and their ter-
raced fields. It is not uncommon to be
invited into the homes of Hmong people
to have tea or rice wine and to be intro-
duced to their family and friends.
On our last day, we woke up early
and enjoyed the fresh crisp mountain
air and the landscape. After breakfast,
we checked-out and headed back to
Hanoi. On the way, we made two stops.
First we went to Kim Noi Hill to take
photos and see the picturesque views
as well as Kim Noi village, where we
strolled around taking in everyday life.
We then visited Mam Xoi to see Guong
Troi waterfall. In its pool you can see
not only your own reflection, but also
the reflection of the sky and the sur-
rounding mountains. For lunch we
stopped again in Nghia Lo before head-
ing back to Hanoi.
