THE COFFEE CULTURE
Oriberry Coffee is an initiative run by
a local NGO to provide fair opportuni-
ties for local farmers in remote areas
of Vietnam. The coffee beans are hand-
picked before being roasted at the point
of origin and delivered to the store,
providing premium single-origin coffee
direct from the farmer to your cup. The
bestselling product is the Khe Sanh Ara-
bica Black Label.
Puku Café & Bar (16 Tong Duy Tan,
Hoan Kiem district) is the place to head
for a comfy seat, a good atmosphere,
and some great western grub. The origi-
nal Kiwi owners of Puku got so fed up
of drinking sub-standard espresso back
in 2001 that they shipped their own
espresso machine up from the South-
ern hemisphere and developed a café
around it. Now in its second incarna-
tion, Puku is more popular than ever.
The coffee - 80 percent sweet premium
Arabica beans and 20 percent Robustas
- best-enjoyed in the courtyard.
Hanoi Cooking Centre (44 Chau
Long street, Ba Dinh district) is an ac-
claimed cooking school near Hanoi’s
picturesque Truc Bach Lake and it is
also home to a wonderfully quiet, leafy
courtyard. Grab a paperback and an
espresso-based beverage of your choice
(made with Punto Italia’s 100 percent
Arabica Superiore blend) and while
away the day.
Coffee Club Cafe Bistro (3B Le
Thai To, Hoan Kiem) is located on
the fourth floor of a French colonial
building with a terrace overlooking
scenic Hoan Kiem lake. Stylish design
and Italian illy coffee make it a hit
with locals and tourists. The al fresco
style restaurant retains the warmth of
a traditional Vietnamese space, bring-
ing guests an exciting experience at
any time of the day. It’s an amazing
rendezvous and a great place to take
in the beauty of Hanoi.
Commune (20A Duong Ven Ho, Tay
Ho district) was set up as a collabora-
tive office, creative and social enterprise
hub, cafe and bar. It stocks high-quality,
locally grown roasted coffee and serves
all styles of Italian coffee. The highlight
is the rooftop, fromwhere you can enjoy
panoramic views. The Recovery Break-
fast comes highly recommended.
