Dear readers,
With the annual Swing for the Kids golf tournament taking place
this month, we thought it's opportune to reflect on the growing im-
portance of corporate social responsibility in Vietnam.
The Swing for the Kids golf tournament brings scores of compa-
nies together to raise scholarships funds for students facing finan-
cial difficulty. While the event lasts just one day, the students who
receive help throughout their studies and continue to do so through-
out their lives.
This tournament and the help it provides is a source of great pride
for me personally and for the Vietnam Investment Review team as a
whole. Turn to page 44 to read some first-hand accounts from stu-
dents who have continued their studies thanks to a scholarship and
read the rest of our CSR features for an insight into the good work
being done by many Vietnam-based firms.
Looking beyond Vietnam’s borders we have a special report on
the growing rhino trade which is being fuelled largely by demand
from both Vietnam and neighbouring China. A new communications
campaign has recently been rolled out to educate the public about
the danger that purchasing rhino products is placing this majestic
creature in.
In our travel slot this month we feature the ‘sleeping dragon’ of
Quang Ninh province. This region of Vietnam is blessed with count-
less sites of natural beauty, tens of ancient pagodas, many unique
festivals and, of course, Halong Bay. Nevertheless, those in the tour-
ism trade are of the opinion that more needs to be done to fully
capitalise on the gifts the province has. Efforts are now underway
to develop new projects and connect existing offerings with better
infrastructure foreshadowing a bright future for the area.
