From 1558-1945, Hue was the
kingdom of nine Nguyen Lords who
ruled over the southern region (Dang
Trong), then the kingdom of the Tay
Son Dynasty.
Hue is often associated with luxury
citadels and palaces, solemn tombs,
and famous landscapes with a quiet
and romantic ambience.
Construction of Hue Citadel start-
ed in 1805, under the reign of Em-
peror Gia Long and was completed in
1832 under the reign of Emperor Ming
Mang. The kings ordered the building
of ramparts, royal palaces and other
construction works.
The Imperial City is located in the
centre of the Citadel where the high-
est offices of Vietnam’s feudalism and
sanctums honour decreased emperors.
Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Citadel) is
located inside the Imperial City and was
reserved for the Emperor and his family.
Some relics in the Forbidden Citadel are
Can Chanh Palace (the place for the eve-
ryday work of emperors), Can Thanh (the
emperor’s private palace), Khon Thai Resi-
dence (the queen’s apartment) and Duyet
Thi Duong house (the royal theatre).
Sixteen relics in Hue were recog-
nised by UNESCO as world cultural her-
itage sites, including Kinh Thanh and
Hoang Thanh.
The Hue relic complex is not only a
symbol of the cultural legacy of Vietnam
but also a special tourism centre. How-
ever, it still has a long way to go in terms
of achieving global status. This year is
important in terms of spurring Hue’s
development in light of the provincial
urban development strategy to 2020.
The core of the strategy
Thua Thien Hue province aims be-
come a centrally governed municipality
by 2020, and one of the major develop-
ment hubs of the country in culture, tour-
ism, science and technology, in-depth
healthcare, education and training.
According to the provincial People’s
Committee chairman Nguyen Van Cao,
to realise the goals the province needs
to meet basic development criteria
across the board like in areas includ-
ing infrastructure, environmental sani-
tation, landscaping, budget collection
and per capital GDP.
Cao says preserving the distinct val-
ues of Hue as Vietnam’s ancient capital
city is a central task.
Keeping Vietnam’s distinctive cul-
tural values intact and presenting them
to international visitors and constantly
bettering urban and transport infra-
structure are also regarded as tasks of
high importance.
The province has executed big pro-
jects including the world-class Laguna
resort, the provincial general hospital
and an international hospital, upgrad-
ing Phu Bai international airport and
building a by-pass west of Hue.
This year, the province will con-
tinue focusing on urban development
with priority given to the land along
National Highway 1A and cultivating a
healthy lifestyle in urban areas.
Other important tasks are main-
taining economic growth at a reason-
able level closely linked to environ-
mental protection and ensuring social
welfare. Focus will also be placed on
spurring development in diverse fields
of culture, tourism, healthcare, edu-
cation-training, science and technol-
ogy and ultimately turning Hue into a
centrally governed municipality in the
near future.
