Grand
ambitions
The Hue relics have undergone
sweeping changes since winning global
recognition two decades ago. During this
long period several hundred architectural
works were gradually restored to their
original glory. This has helped turn Hue
into one of the places visitors should not
miss in Vietnam’s central region.
Besides restoring and preserving
tangible cultural heritages, growing
attention has been paid to studying,
preserving and bringing forth Hue’s in-
tangible cultural legacy.
Apart from particular success with
UNESCO’s Hanoi office and relevant gov-
ernment agencies working to preserve
Hue’s royal court music (
nha nhac
), the
Hue Relic Conservation Centre has de-
ployed a wide range of activities to pro-
mote other intangible heritages unique
to Hue, like royal festivities, royal danc-
es, royal dramas, traditional crafts, royal
food and bonsai art.
The dexterous blending of tangible
and intangible heritage values has made
Hue increasingly appealing to visitors.
Nowadays, visitors to the royal pal-
ace can watch royal plays and listen
to Hue royal court music at Duyet Thi
Duong theatre or enjoy Hue chamber
music at Truong Sanh Palace.
In mid-April 2013, the centre
launched new tours linking Dai Noi (the
Inner City) and a museum where Hue
royal palace antiques are being kept,
providing visitors a chance to admire
the Nguyen dynasty’s precious assets
on display at Long An Palace.
Facilities have also become increas-
ingly professional, with clearly quoted
prices. In the Imperial City and areas in
the vicinity, elephant riding, horse carts
and electric car services are now in place.
The provincial authorities have as-
serted: “We will join efforts to turn
Thua Thien-Hue into a charming ven-
ue to domestic and foreign visitors; a
big tourism and services hub in the
central region, making Hue as a festi-
val city famous throughout the world
based on the global value of Hue cul-
tural heritages.”
An urban masterpiece
Hue’s ancient capital city relic com-
plex represents notable achievements
in architecture, sculpture and aesthet-
ics as well as the creative labour of
Vietnamese people, particularly in arts
and architecture.
This year marks the 20 year anniversary of the ancient capital city of Hue winning
recognition as a global heritage site
