PROSPERITYYUSHENG
When the New Year comes, groups
of family, friends and colleagues gath-
er together around tables and toss
Yu Sheng into the air with chopsticks
while making wishes to mark the start
of a prosperous new year.
The tossing action is known as
“Lo Hei” , which means to “toss and
rise”, or “tossing up good fortune”. The
whole ceremony symbolizes the shar-
ing of joy, everlasting good luck and
prosperity. According to the legend, the
higher the toss, the more one will pros-
per in the New Year.
Yu Sheng is a must-have savoury
dish that binds family and friends to-
gether. A symbol of well-wishes, abun-
dance and good fortune, it is usually
served as an appetizer to bring good
luck for the New Year. This harmoni-
ous combination is loaded with full
of flavour and texture of raw fish,
nuts, crispy crackers, carrot, dried
winter melon, chili, mango and many
other ingredients. Yu Sheng has much
symbolic meaning – for example, the
sound of the word for fish in Canton-
ese sounds like the word for abun-
dance of wealth and long life. Mean-
while, pomelo signifies good luck and
good fortune; pepper symbolizes the
scattering of treasures; oil represents
wealth and money flowing in from all
directions; while white radish promises
business prosperity.
