TRAVEL HOTLIST 2014
VietJetAir has signed the biggest-
ever deal in Vietnam’s aviation indus-
try and is to buy 60 planes as part of
its aims to offer low-cost flights on an
all-modern fleet across the Asia-Pacific
region. The order is for 14 of the cur-
rent single-aisle A320 model and 42
of the new A320Neo. All are due to
enter service between 2015 and 2022.
VietJetAir will also lease eight more
A320. The airline has also secured an
open option to purchase 30 more Air-
bus, bringing the total order to 100.
VietJetAir is the country’s first pri-
vate low-cost airline. It currently op-
erates 10 Airbus aircraft serving 16
destinations in Vietnam and two inter-
national routes.
Another low-cost carrier, Jetstar
Pacific, is also expanding, planning to
add five aircraft to bring its fleet to
10 jets. Vietnam Airlines is currently
operating more than 80 aircraft and is
adding more to its fleet.
Vingroup, which is developing
resorts and entertainment complexes
across the country, has started con-
struction of Vinpearl Hai Giang, with
total investment of $166 million. This
is the largest tourist complex in central
Binh Dinh province and creates a tour-
ism landmark for the locality and the
whole central region.
The project of Hai Giang Joint-
Stock Co., an affiliate of Vingroup,
covers an area of 656ha in the south
of Nhon Hoi Economic Zone. It is bor-
dered by the non-tariff area, Phuong
Mai Mountain and the East Sea. De-
signed to be an ecotourism site, it will
include an 18-hole golf course, a five-
star hotel and resort villas, an adminis-
tration centre, hotels and apartments,
an entertainment park, a cable car
system and other auxiliary facilities.
The 1.5km cable car system, the
first in the province, is being built in Quy
Nhon City, from Mui Tan to Phuong Mai
peninsula. It is expected to be complet-
ed and come into operation in 2017.
The province, which has a coast-
line of 134km and is blessed with
beautiful landscapes and beaches, is
focusing on promoting traditional cul-
tural activities and its coastal area to
create a major push for its tourism.
The expanded Terminal 1 of Noi Bai
International Airport has been put into
operation. The three- storey upgrade
covering an area of 25,000sqm was
built at a cost of about $24 million by
the Airports Corporation of Vietnam. It
includes five departure and two arrival
gates that help save time for procedure
clearance and improve the quality of
services for up to 3 million passengers
per year.
The newly opened Hall E is con-
nected to hall A within terminal 1
through an integrated hallway with
identical architecture. The new facility,
launched just in time for the upcoming
Lunar New Year, will enhance airline
service quality at the airport. The termi-
nal was inaugurated in 2001 to receive
6 million passengers per year.\
In addition, Noi Bai International
Airport welcomed the 12th million pas-
senger on December 5, 2013. Currently
36 domestic and international airlines
from 30 countries fly to Noi Bai.
A two-fold increase in the num-
ber of passengers which has caused
overloading in recent times forced the
Airports Corporation of Vietnam to up-
grade the terminal.
