Dear readers,
The Mekong River Delta is known as the rice basket of Vietnam, but tour-
ism has also been growing rapidly in recent years. New infrastructural pro-
jects, such as the new airport in Can Tho city and upgraded roads fromHo Chi
Minh City have paved the way for tourism in the delta to take off.
Travel agents have launched tours to reach fruit gardens or vibrant float-
ing villages by sailing on the region’s meandering canals and rivers. How-
ever, it seems all the provinces are offerring the same tourist products and as
a result, tour operators have called for local authorities to diversify offerings.
One of the attractions of the region is the rich culture of the Khmer peo-
ple. In this issue you will find in-depth insights into their life. Meanwhile, our
special feature on the Mekong Delta will provide an insight into what tourism
authorities in the area can do to cash in on their culture and lifestyle.
We also have coverage of the demise of the iconic cyclo. For 70 years
these open-air pedicabs have been symbols of the city, but the Hanoi authori-
ties are now blaming the cyclo for the worsening the traffic situation in the
capital city. This means the future of the cyclo is in doubt.
This month, Timeout also reports on the struggle for survival among Viet-
nam’s art galleries. It seems that while the golden age for local artists is over,
there is a glimmer of hope, with signs of development on the horizon and a
growing number of dedicated individuals working hard to keep art alive.
