T
he Mekong River is one of the
ten longest rivers in the world.
At 4,200km it flows through
China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand,
Cambodia, and into Vietnam, where two
branches fan out into nine estuaries.
The delta is very important in
terms of its economy and culture. It
is close to Ho Chi Minh City and con-
veniently located near other Southeast
Asian countries.
It is very easy to get there by road,
boat and air. From Ho Chi Minh City it
takes a few hours to drive along Na-
tional Road 1A to Long An, Tien Giang,
Vinh Long, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Ca
Mau provinces.
By air, there are many flights daily,
with Vietnam Airlines and VietJetAir
connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh
City with Can Tho, Phu Quoc, Ca Mau
and Rach Gia.
Abundant natural
resources
The Mekong River brings the delta
rich alluvium through the tangled sys-
tem of canals and channels. Alongside
the mountains, forests, islands and
beaches, this is a diversified ecological
region.
The Mekong Delta, therefore, has
much potential for tourism. The delta
