or many tourists and locals alike,
the cyclo is the best way to get
a feel for the city of Hanoi. “The
ultimate way to go through the
crowded and bustling old quarter of
Hanoi is a cyclo ride,” said Anthony
Johnson, an American tourist who vis-
ited Vietnam last year.
“We first thought it a little cheesy,
but you can get a perfect view forward
and to the sides to take photographs and
take in the scenes all around”, he added.
Appearing on Saigon’s streets in
1939, the cyclo used to be a common
form of transport. However, today the
slow cyclo cannot compete with mod-
ern vehicles but they still seem to be
irreplaceable for tourists.
Shuvo Saha from Bangladesh who
visited Hanoi this July, said: “You may
want to walk around as that is the best
way to take in the flavour old quarter.
However, we had a toddler and push-
ing strollers amid the millions of mo-
torbikes may have been a bit difficult.
So, we took a one hour cyclo tour and it
turned out to be a great solution.”
Cyclos also bring back a lot of old
memories for locals.
Mai Thi Huong, 60, usually chooses
a cyclo for her evening relaxing trip. “I
used to live on Luong Van Can street
which is very near Hoan Kiem Lake.
