MAGNIFIQUE MOONCAKES
W
hen August arrives, Viet-
namese people, especially
children, are excited for
the mid-autumn festival,
the most colourful time of the year.
From August 14 – September 19,
those passing by Thanh Nien or Yen Phu
streets will have their senses awakened
by the sweet smell pervading from the
eye-catching black and red boxes of
cakes being sold in the front of Sofitel
Plaza Hanoi.
Moon cakes, like the festival’s
sparkling star shaped lanterns or joy-
ful dragon dances, are indispensible for
the occasion and Sofitel Plaza Hanoi
understands the importance of having
the best quality.
Our collection, delicious in taste
and elegant in design, come in six fla-
vours, including the traditional Asian
tastes of lotus, green bean, taro, and
green rice paste and Western interpre-
tations using jambon and fruity fresh
honeydew paste.
Finely crafted and baked, each of
the golden brown delights bring great
pleasure, their moist skin blending well
with the smooth filling
“Our cakes are prepared with only
the very freshest ingredients. The salt-
ed egg yolks are washed carefully in
wine and baked for a while before us-
ing,” said Linda Nhi, Chinese Restaurant
manager at Sofitel Plaza Hanoi.
The crust should be very thin. After
baking, the cakes are rested for a while
so that their crusts can absorb the oil
from patching.
“At this time, you can taste the cake
and the crust adheres to the patching
so well that you can not distinguish the
two. All you feel is a soft and smooth
mixture which melts on your tongue,”
said Nhi.
This season sees two kinds of spe-
cially designed mooncake packages
at the Plaza: the Golden Dragon – a
hand crafted 24K plated dragon sculp-
ture with your choice of home-made
mooncakes; and the Golden Carp – a
hand crafted 24K plated carp name card
holder, also with your choice of home-
made mooncakes.
In the orient, the dragon is a sym-
bol of prosperity and power, while the
carp is associated with luck and wealth.
The hotel’s mooncakes are made
without preservatives and so they are
not only delicous, but also healthier
than many others. “Even though it is
hard to preserve food in Vietnam’s cli-
mate, we traditionally do not use any
substances to prolong the life of our
products. Our mooncakes keep well
for 7-10 days only. For us, good food
should be healthy food,” Nhi said.
Luxurious enough to express grate-
fulness, varied enough to meet diverse
demands, sophisticated enough to af-
firm the profound choice of the cake
maker, and tasty enough to satisfy the
most discerning palate, mooncakes
from Sofitel will be an amazing gift to
those whom you love and respect.
