CON DAO ISLAND
Located at the very southern tip
of Vietnam, Con Dao Island is con-
sidered one of the best-kept secrets
of the region. That said, it is quickly
gaining a favorable reputation with
visitors.
The island remains unspoiled and
provides a relaxing and scenic break.
More than 20 dive sites range from
shallow dives that are ideal for begin-
ners and snorkelers alike, to 21 meter
dives for the experienced.
The unique marine life includes a
wide selection of tropical fish species,
rays, sharks and turtles.
WHALE ISLAND
Whale Island lies just 90 minutes
away from Nha Trang and its waters
are home to the docile whale shark
which migrates through the region in
the summer.
The site offers turquoise water
and soft, white sandy beaches that
surround a basic bungalow resort.
Perhaps most impressive is the
White Rock dive site with its soft coral
walls of up to fifty meters. Other dive
spots include the colourful Hon Trau
Nam where you’ll almost certainly see
rays gliding about.
Then there is also Hon Tai Island,
which is good for experienced and
beginner divers. Here, you will see
Nurse Sharks, frogfish and sea slugs.
This site is the most popular site, so be
warned, it may be rather busy.
PHU QUOC
Phu Quoc lies just off the coast
of Cambodia and rises out of the
Gulf of Thailand majestically, tower-
ing above warm waters. It has grown
in popularity in the last fifteen years
and is beginning to rival some of the
other most popular nearby destina-
tions which are favorites of divers
and snorkelers.
The best dive spots depend on the
winds, while the delta waters some-
times reduce visibility dramatically.
However, Phu Quoc makes up for
these drawbacks with a small number
of tourists and the most unique coral
reef growth to be found in Vietnam-
ese waters. The best time to dive is
from May to August, when the water
is calm and visibility averages around
20 to 30 meters.
