gara, as consultants to help with its
overall planning for tourism develop-
ment in the period of 2013-2025.
The provincial authority hopes that
the master plan will create a fundamen-
tal breakthrough in local tourism devel-
opment to build brand names for tour-
ism sites in Hue and make the province
a leading destination in Southeast Asia.
The master plan must fit in with the
model of sustainable tourism develop-
ment towards the green growth of the
world by way of preserving the values
of natural and cultural heritage sites.
Akitek Tenggara and Thua Thien-
Hue have agreed on 14 major projects,
including five that need foreign in-
vestment. The main project is focused
on promoting the agricultural market
through a close relationship between ru-
ral and urban areas, poverty alleviation,
and tourism development in the coun-
tryside as a model of a green economy.
The remaining projects are related
to yachting on the Perfume River and
the Chan May-Lang Co green city.
DEVELOPING TRADITIONAL
CRAFTS-VILLAGES
According to Phan Tien Dung, direc-
tor of Thua Thien Hue’s Culture, Sports
and Tourism Department, in 2012 the
province’s traditional crafts villages cre-
ated more than 2,500 jobs and export
turnover for home crafts increased to
$15 million.
Thua Thien-Hue has more than
200 traditional crafts villages of which
88 are in Hue itself. The province is
deploying many comprehensive solu-
tions to restore and develop traditional
crafts villages to create interesting
tourism spots that will attract many
more tourists.
The traditional handicraft products
of Hue play an important role in at-
tracting tourists. The crafts villages are
currently being restored and developed
along sustainable tourism development
lines to honour and uphold the tradi-
tional and cultural values of each region.
Tourists visiting such villages are
not only looking to shop or watch
craftsmen, they also want to explore
the ancient intangible values. For ex-
ample, it’s interesting to visit Phu Cam
village to see how to make conical hats
and embroider your name on the newly
made products. You can also explore
the 500 year old Phuoc Tich village
with its ancient pottery craft to see old
craftsmen creating sophisticated items
which were once made for royal use.
The target is to welcome 3 million
tourists in 2015, including 1.5 million
international visitors. To promote tradi-
tional handicrafts, the Thua Thien - Hue
Provincial People’s Committee approved
a project to restore and develop tradi-
tional craft villages from 2010-2015,
highlighting bronze casting, high-qual-
ity woodwork, embroidery, traditional
cuisines and ao dai tailoring. Accord-
ingly, the province is investing VND30
billion per year to build infrastructure
for crafts villages.
