Dear readers,
When it comes to travel in Vietnam, there is much talk of the
colourful hill station of Sapa, the picturesque Halong Bay and the
beautiful beaches and heritage sites of the central coast, but there is
little mention of the Red River Delta provinces, with the exception of
Hanoi of course. However, this area offers much to discover.
The northern river delta is rich in cultural and historial value.
Around Hanoi, there are many trade villages making conical hats,
silk, ceramics or paintings that are well worth visiting. These villages
have been able to retain their old architecture and culture despite
the rapid modernisation and urbanization of nearby Hanoi.
Sailing through the yellow paddy fields of Ninh Binh province,
or cycling through the countryside of Bac Ninh are also major draws
of the region. The delta area is home to a lot of historical relics and
pagodas where you will find peace and tranquility in abundance.
Aiming to promote the area’s tourism, the government has de-
cided to theme this year the Year of Red River Delta Tourism, with a
lot of activities slated to take place throughout the region. You find
will find a plethora of festivals, sports activities and photo exhibi-
tions whether you are in Hanoi, Haiphong or Bac Ninh.
Further afield, in Quang Ninh province, there has been and will
be a lot of cultural activities for you to take part in such as the Halong
Carnaval and Sakura Festival. This is part of efforts by the local au-
thorities to develop tourism as one of key industries and in the work
are plans for developing more golf courses and a mammoth casino
resort north of Halong Bay. That may take years to come true, but
this summer you can immerse yourself in the blue sea or sail through
thousands of mountains of different shapes and sizes in Halong Bay.
Yours sincerely
