Dear readers,
Golf has become a controversial issue in recent years in Viet-
nam with critics arguing golf courses eat up agricultural land and
spoil the environment, and proponents claiming golf brings a lot of
economic benefits. Despite the opposition, golf is still growing.
Golf is helping fund education for poor students and disadvan-
taged people via the Vietnam Investment Review's Swing for the Kids
charity tournament. Having run for six years, thousands of students
have been provided with scholarships, thanks to the generous sup-
port of the business community, with Vinausteel-SSE Steel, Ving-
roup, KinderWorld Group and BRG Group leading the charge. This
year the tournament will be held at the King’s Island Golf Club, just
outside Hanoi on April 21.
With resorts now getting in on the act and building their own
courses, tour operators around the world are setting their sights on
Vietnam as an upcoming golf destination. Danang is establishing
itself most firmly in this market, with world-class golf courses along-
side new luxury resorts and wonderful beaches.
This city is also now being touted as the next tourism hotspot
in Southeast Asia and an alternative to Bali and Phuket. A destina-
tion marketing organisation has been set up to promote the Central
Coast to the world tourism market and to lobby more international
airlines to fly in. In recent years Danang's infrastructure has been
hugely upgraded, with some projects, such as the newly opened
Dragon Bridge, becoming tourist attractions in their own right.
This issue we provide you with a guide to Danang and its re-
sorts, heritage and entertainment options, such as April's interna-
tional firework competition.
Yours sincerely
