DANANG IN FOCUS
Themed, Love for the Han River,
the sixth Danang International Fire-
works Competition will take place
from April 29 – 30. Teams from Rus-
sia, Japan, Italy, the US and Viet-
nam will take part. Founded in Au-
gust 2008, Team Danang Fireworks
was the first Vietnamese pyrotechnic
team to participate in an internation-
al fireworks competition. Team Dan-
ang Fireworks excels at providing the
highest standards of precision and
artistry. The main stand will be set
up along Tran Hung Dao street oppo-
site the fireworks performance site.
Locals and visitors will also be able
to enjoy the thrilling performances
from Bach Dang street, the Han River
and Thuan Phuoc bridges, and on
boats permitted to operate on the
Han River.
The second Danang Sandcastle
Competition is expected to take place
in May and promises to be bigger and
better than last year. Philip Bossley
of Silversun Events – the competiton
organiser, said he expects between
1,000 and 2,000 competitors this year.
They will build sandcastles along 2.5
kilometers of beach for up to 10,000
spectators.
However, Bossley said a lack of
funding could limit the event’s scale and
he called for support from sponsors.
“As always, finding funding and
support for new events is difficult.
We had to limit the size based on the
budget, which is a shame. It’s difficult
to get strong support from all of the
hotels and resorts. While some are
very keen to help others are not,”
he said.
An Australian national, Bossley
has lived in Vietnam for many years.
He plans to develop the event at
other locations in Vietnam and then
have a national competition in Dan-
ang each year.
He expects the event will grow
year on year and Vietnamese holiday
makers will book this weekend and
travel to Danang along with foreign
tourists. He also hopes that eventually
regional and international competitors
will join. Last year, 65 teams competed
in before 1,000 spectators.
