Nestlé Vietnam and Western Highlands Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute (WASI) today held a conference to review five years of joint project implementation to support sustainable coffee farming in Vietnam.

The project is part of Nestlé’s NESCAFÉ Plan Nestlé deployed in Vietnam since 2011. At the moment, Nestlé is the first and only foreign company to cooperate with WASI to carry out research and development and technology transfer activities in sustainable coffee growing.

In the past five years, with the cooperation of WASI, Nestlé has distributed 15 million disease-resistant high-yield coffee seedlings to farmers in the Central Highlands region to replace old coffee trees. 4 million of the seedlings were planted in WASI’s gardens.

With the financial support of Nestlé, WASI built labs for experiments and installed modern equipment for its test garden in order to create high-quality, high-yield, and pest-resistant coffee breeds.

They also built model gardens for farmers to visit and learn farming techniques that they can apply in their own gardens. Techniques taught to farmers include the smart use of fertilizer, making fertilizer from the skin of coffee beans, which is particularly useful to cut costs on fertilizers and pesticides, planting other trees in between coffee trees, and water-efficient irrigation, which saves 40 per cent of water.

WASI experts also learned from Nestlé and other international experts techniques to create breeds.

At the moment, more than 21,000 farmer households in four provinces are part of NESCAFÉ Plan. The project expects to expand coverage to 500,000 coffee farmers in the whole country and help them get familiar with international coffee growing standards, including 4C, UTZ, Rainforest, and Fairtrade.

In 2011-2015, the project helped farmers ensure the quality of their products and raise their income. The project has now entered the second phase that will last until 2020.
