French retailer Carrefour said on Monday it would sell its 42 outlets in Thailand to rival Big C, part of the French Casino group, for 868 million euros ($1.19 billion).

The transaction should be completed by the first quarter of next year, Carrefour said in a statement.

Present in Thailand since 1996, Carrefour operates 42 shops including 34 hypermarkets and ranks fifth for food sales with a six per cent market share.
