Cargo truck accidents put Lam Dong residents at risk

LAM DONG - Trucks carrying cargo from the Tan Rai Aluminium Plant have caused numerous traffic incidents, killing one person and putting fear into people who live along the route.

About 100 trucks carry between 1,700 and 2,000 tonnes of aluminium for export a day from the central highlands of Lam Dong Province to Go Dau Port in southern Dong Nai Province since May.

In that period, aluminium trucks have overturned 10 times on the route between local road 725 and national highway 20 in Bao Lam District.

In September, one person died in the most recent incident.

"Dangerous traffic situations like this cause people living nearby to panic," said Nguyen Thi Huong, who lives near the route.

In response to concerns, the People's Committee of Bao Lam District ordered the manager of the aluminium plant to control the situation.

Vuong Bao Lam, chairman of the committee, said he asked the provincial transport department to re-check local road 725's design for flaws after several drivers said it sloped to one side, throwing the huge trucks off balance.

After the road death in September, police started to monitor the speed of aluminium trucks along local road 725 during rush hours, Huong said.

In recent days, the density of aluminium trucks driving the route has gone down, according to a province based Vietnam News Agency correspondent.

Pham Le Sang Ngoc Tien, a driver, said that after the fatal traffic incident, the company installed devices in the trucks to monitor the drivers' speed and distance.
