After a nerve-racking 12-hour competition, the quick photo contest finally announced a champion who would claim a trip to Japan’s historic city- Nagano- to join a the PhotoClinic nine-day photography course.

The winner of this year’s competition was Doan Thanh Tung, born in 1987 participating in the topic “Your favorite place”.

The outstanding photograph showing his deep love for his wife outshone more than 3,000 other contestants to score the grand prize in this year’s competition in Hanoi.

Following the spirit of 2014’s competition, appreciating Vietnamese culture and people, the winning photograph received great compliments from the judges.

Photographer Hoang Giang Hai, one of the three judges, remarked: “I always value photos that speak up, tell stories, embrace emotions, and at the same time record timeless moments. The photo captured by Thanh Tung fulfilled all of these values for me.”

The grand winner of this year’s contest, Doan Thanh Tung, currently a freelancer shared his thoughts about the photograph: “Becoming the grand winner is such a huge privilege for me. I am honoured to receive this award. It is amazing knowing that my photo will represent the country, standing alongside other international works.”

Doan Thanh Tung, along with the winner of the Ho Chi Minh City contest which takes place one week later, will participate in the training course along with other PhotoMarathon winners from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Cambodia and Thailand.

On the very first day of the competition, Hanoi had attracted more than 3,000 participants, breaking the record of 2,464 last year. QuanNgua stadium, where the event was held, was full of enthusiastic participants wearing the competition’s red-coloured T-shirts.

Beside the record-breaking number of players, the quality of results in this year’s Canon PhotoMarathon also surpassed the judges’ expectations.

First, second and third prize winners in each topic were highly acclaimed and were well deserved by their respective recipients.

“Last year, as a member of the judging panel, I had some experiences with the participating works. This year, the photographers are very professional,” said photographer Maika Elan, another judge.

“All the submitted photos featured absolutely vivid and unique angles and colours, highlighting Vietnamese life through its culture and people. Competitors have been improving their skills over the last year,” she added.

Along with the event’s success in terms of both quality and quantity, all of the money raised from registration fees will be contributed to the “Canon – Help with love” Fund, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Fund of Canon Marketing Vietnam, dedicated to helping underprivileged children.

Regarding Canon PhotoMarathon 2014, Nick Yoshida, president and CEO of Canon Marketing Vietnam, shared: “This is an astounding success. This year’s record number of participants is a gift for all the organisers.
