HCMC Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) will organize a concert called “Khachaturian and Prokofiev” at HCMC Opera House on August 9, featuring famous masterpieces of Russian composers Aram Khachaturian and Sergei Prokofiev whose compositions became part of the music classics of the 20th century.

Beauty of Russian music in “Khachaturian and Prokofiev” concert
Violinist Lidia Dobrevska.

The concert will be held under the baton of Vietnamese conductor Le Phi Phi who has returned from his performance in Macedonia. Khachaturian’s music brought together the Eastern rhythms and harmonies of Armenian, Georgian, and Azerbaijani music with Western traditions during the Soviet era will be staged by violinist Lidia Dobrevska and HBSO Symphony Orchestra.

The first part of the event will feature Aram Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto in D Minor which bears the unmistakable stamp of its composer in its characteristic rhythmic drive and rich, folk-infused melodies. Being staged for the first time by David Oistrakh in Moscow 1940, the concerto begins with a fierce and energetic figure, followed by its intoxicating Andante with a free-flowing, semi-improvisatory feel and the highly folk-influenced finale with the form of a vigorous Armenian country dance.

Violinist Lidia Dobrevska will show the beauty of Russian music mixed with American folk music as she did successfully in Russia, Macedonia, Italy, France, Egypt, Bulgaria, Spain, Sweden and Portugal.

Khachaturian is also known internationally for his ballet music and The Adagio from ballet ”Spartacus” – his most acclaimed work in the post-Stalin period – will cover the second part of the concert. The ballet won Lenin Prize in 1954 and has been revised into many versions by many international choreographers like Leonid Yakobso, Igor Moiseev and Yury Grigorovich.

Audiences will be also entertained with the Sergei Prokofiev’s Suite No.2 from “Romeo and Juliet” which has been staged in many places around the world like Denmark, the U.S., Germany, Hungary and Canada.

The concert will start at 8 p.m. at the Opera House, 7 Lam Son Square in HCMC’s District 1. Admission costs VND550,000, VND400,000, VND350,000 and VND200,000 per person. Students just pay VND80,000.
