The Asian-Oceania Computing Industry Organisation (ASOCIO) ICT Summit 2014 opened in Hanoi on October 29 with the participation of 700 delegations from nearly 20 regional countries.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam underscored the point that all people ranging from intellectuals to farmers and disabled people can use information technology to improve their lives.

“All countries both developing and developed can also use IT to raise their competitiveness and contribute more to the global value chain,” Dam added.

However, IT development poses information safety and security challenges. Hackers cause significant economic losses, Dam said and he expressed hope that the IT community will step up their effort to increase information security.

Dam highly valued the summit theme “ICT – the new paradigm in social-economic development and agriculture restructuring” and said that Vietnam is strong at agricultural production, however, agriculture has not closely attached with IT yet.

IT application in agriculture shared at the summit is valuable for Vietnam to develop agriculture and important for the movement of the country to a more modern globally integrated industrialised society, Dam concluded.

After the opening ceremony, three talks are being held, focusing on IT-restructuring agriculture, IT- new paradigm to effectively improve public services and SMAC (social, mobile, analytics, and cloud)– technological foundation for smart development.
