ANZ Vietnam an Saigon Children’s Charity (SCC) announced a three-year community education programme on November 20 that aims to support 4,000 disadvantaged children and young people in the Mekong Delta.

The 3E - educate, enrich, employ – project launched on Vietnam Teacher’s Day plans to provide education, help support people’s lives, and support the employment prospects of residents in Hau Giang province’s Long My district.

ANZ Vietnam and SCC are cooperating on the project in conjunction with the province’s Education and Training Department to build new schools for young learners as well as provide teaching equipment and technical assistance.

According to ANZ Vietnam CEO Tareq Muhmood, together with SCC and our staff, ANZ hopes to raise more than $600,000 to support this initiative over the three-year period. Our aim is to ultimately make sustainable changes in the community of Long My, one of the poorest areas in the Mekong Delta.

Muhmood said that between himself and ANZ staff, nearly $30,000 had already been raised and the bank itself had matched the $30,000. It plans to keep doubling the charity under that model.

Funds will also be raised via activities held by ANZ and SCC which will include auctions of celebrity items.

ANZ will support the children in the schools by sharing their experiences in finding jobs and working in companies, as well as personal finance skills.

Saigon Children’s Charity director Paul Finnis said the project would provide the necessary tools for disadvantaged children and young people to have opportunities unhindered by their socioeconomic status and help them reach their full potential.

SCC is an NGO registered in Britain and has been operating in Vietnam for 20 years with a belief that education is the best path for a child and their family to rise out of poverty. It builds schools, provides scholarships, opens access to vocational training, and supports organisations working with disabled children.
