At present, Tan Son Nhat International Airport is the biggest and the most important ones in national airport system. It is the biggest international aviation gate for Viet Nam and centre for passenger and cargo transit in southern area.

In 2014, Tan Son Nhat International Airport welcomed over 22 million passengers and received 408,000 tonnes of cargo, had an annual increase of 10.5 and 9.4 per cent respectively.

For the first nine months of this year, despite national economic difficulties, the airport has had over 17.5 million passengers and 280,000 tonnes of cargo, a growth of 18.5 and 7.8 per cent respectively comparing with the same period last year.

The Tan Son Nhat International Airport's master planning was approved by the Primer Minister at decision No 118/TTg on February 27, 1995. After 20 years of implementing the decision, the airport had received a lot of investment for infrastructure.

However, due to change in predication and increasingly developed demand, along with the fact that Tan Son Nhat International Airport will still be the biggest ones until 2020, the Primer Minister has allowed and appointed the Ministry of Transport to approve adjustment of Tan Son Nhat International Airport's detailed master planning from now to 2020 with vision to 2030.

The minister of Transport signed decision No 3193/QD-BGTVT on September 7, 2015 approving adjustment of Tan Son Nhat International Airport's detailed master planning from now to 2020 with vision to 2030 with agree from related ministries, authorities and HCM City People's Committee.
