50 people reported dead, missing due to floods

At least 50 people have been reported dead or missing due to heavy rain and flash floods over the past three days, statistics showed.

According to a report by the National Committee for Search and Rescue, as of 5pm on October 11, as many as 29 people have been killed in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Hoa Binh, Son La, Yen Bai, Quang Tri and 21 others are still missing.

Downpours, triggered by the tropical low pressure system, have caused serious damages to houses and roads and threatened reservoirs across the north central region.

The natural disaster submerged 6,018 houses and collapsed 62 others in Ninh Binh, Ha Tinh, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Hoa Binh, Nam Dinh, Phu Tho and Yen Bai, the Committee said.

About 7,979 households have been evacuated, the Committee added.

Landslides and flooding were reported along national highways crossing these provinces, including National Highways 15A, 16, 48B, 48D, 48E. Floods broke 28 kilometres of dam at Co Chau Reservoir in Ha Tinh, damaging 145 hectares of rice, 2 hectares of orchards and over 11,600 hectares of other crops.

In response to serious weather developments, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc issued an urgent notice to ask local authorities in the north and northern central Viet Nam to take measures to cope with flooding and ensure safety of dams and reservoirs.

Rainfall was measured from 200-550mm over the past days. It is forecast that heavy downpours will continue on October 12 at around 100mm from Son La to Nghe An.
