An accident involving a passenger bus and two trucks in the central province of Quang Ngai on Tuesday morning claimed three lives and injured eight others.

The crash happened at around 8:15 am on the section of National Route 1 that runs through The Loi Village, Tinh Phong Commune, Son Tinh District in the province.

At the site of the accident, a Ford Transit 16 is seen stuck between a yellow cargo truck and a red dump truck.

The Ford had departed from the nearby city of Da Nang and was en route to the south-central province of Binh Dinh at the time of incident, according to initial reports.

“The Ford tried to overtake the cargo truck, but ended up colliding into it, before being hit by the dump truck coming from the opposite direction,” Vo Van Duong, deputy chief of Quang Ngai Police, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) reporters.

“The crash turned the van 180 degrees and sandwiched it between the two trucks.”

The collision killed three, leaving seven seriously injured and one slightly injured, all of whom were on board the passenger bus. The fourth deceased victim died later in hospital.

Traffic moving northward on the route was blocked and had to make a detour to continue their trip as forensic personnel removed corpses from the site.

Director of Quang Ngai Department of Health Nguyen Tan Duc, who was present at Quang Ngai General Hospital to oversee the treatment of survivors, said those severely injured were being treated in the intensive care unit.

The Traffic Safety Committee of Quang Ngai also provided VND2 million (US$90) financial assistance to the family of each victim.
