Doctors at the Quang Nam General Hospital in central Vietnam said they successfully delivered a baby weighing 6.5 kg by Cesarean section on Wednesday.

This is the heaviest baby that doctors at the hospital have ever delivered, Dr. Vo Thoi, head of the hospital’s Obstetrics Department, said on Friday.

The newborn’s mother, Tran Thi Bong, 38, weighed 102 kg before the Cesarean operation, Dr. Thoi said, adding that this was her fourth child.

The woman, who is from Quang Nam's Thang Binh District, was hospitalized on Wednesday afternoon after showing signs of labor.

After examination, doctors diagnosed Bong with preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, often the kidneys.

The doctors then decided to perform a Cesarean section, and the operation successfully came to an end at 9 pm the same day.

Both the mother and baby are in good health and are expected to be discharged from the hospital on Sunday, Dr. Thoi said.

Three years ago, an American baby, Emily Maldonado, was born in California with the same weight as the above Vietnamese baby.

Many other newborns with weights over 6 kg have been recorded in many other countries in the world.

Ademilton dos Santos was born with a weight of 7.7 kg in Brazil in 2005. Two years later, a 7.75-kg baby came into world in Siberia.

In 2009, Akbar Risuddin was born weighing 8.7 kg in Indonesia, and 6.8-kg Luciana came into being in Romania.
